A Chinese national employed by a construction contractor is currently missing after a workplace accident at Pier 34 (P34) on the Demerara River on Wednesday, January 8, 2025. The incident occurred around 8:20 p.m. while the worker was involved in rigging operations during the offloading of materials from a barge.

Reports indicate that the worker was swept away by the swift current of the river. Upon receiving the distress alert, the company’s emergency response team quickly initiated search and rescue operations, with support from the Coast Guard and police units on patrol in the area.

Despite extensive efforts throughout the night, including the deployment of a diver to assist with the search, the missing worker has not been located. Search operations will continue in hopes of finding the individual.

The contractor is fully cooperating with local authorities, and the Ministry of Labour’s Occupational Health and Safety Department has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident to determine its cause and ensure all safety protocols were followed.
