“We will take our people back,” says Jagdeo on Trump’s mass deportation plans
Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo has expressed the government’s readiness to accept Guyanese nationals who may be affected by United States President Donald Trump’s mass deportation plans.
“We will take our people back if they’re deported,” Dr. Jagdeo said at a press conference at Freedom House on Robb Street on Thursday.
He added, “What are we going to do? Refuse to take our people back? We would have to take our people back if they’re Guyanese.” Asked about the possible pressure on the social sectors, Dr. Jagdeo noted that Guyana has accepted other nationalities, like Venezuelans, and would not turn its one away.
“If they’re deported back home, this is home to them. The government don’t have much of a choice,” the former Head of State remarked.
Furthermore, the Vice President stated that there would be an effective and efficient verification before accepting these individuals.
On Monday, Trump signed executive orders enhancing operations of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, in sensitive areas, expanding expedited deportations for undocumented immigrants, and aiming to end birthright citizenship.
Trump has pledged to tighten immigration laws and roll back Biden-era policies that he believes have encouraged a rise in undocumented immigration.
