Mawali Clarke, 36, vendor of Lot 554 Williams Street, Kitty, Georgetown appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Wednesday to face charges of assault, disorderly behaviour and using threatening language.

During his appearance before acting Chief Magistrate Faith Mc Gusty, Clarke pleaded not guilty to the allegations.

Apart from being accused of using threatening language and behaving disorderly at the Alberttown Police Station in Georgetown, Clarke was also charged with assaulting Dwayne Williams.

The court heard that Clarke allegedly assaulted Dwayne Williams, also of Kitty, at the police station and threatened to shoot, cripple, and confine him to a wheelchair.

All the charges stemmed from an incident on January 28, 2025.Williams testified that on the night in question, he was asleep at home when a loud explosion startled him awake.

Upon checking outside, he discovered his car’s windscreen shattered and a bicycle nearby. One of his neighbours informed him that a man in a white T-shirt was seen fleeing the scene.

An inspection of the vehicle revealed that nothing was stolen, so Williams thought at the beginning that somebody had thrown an object at his car.

After repeatedly driving his damaged car through the neighbourhood, he switched to a motorcycle and eventually spotted a man matching the description his neighbour had given.

Williams said he confronted Clarke, asking if he had broken into his car, but instead of responding, Clarke took off running. Clarke, however, denied the charges.

He told the court that although he knew Williams, who lives on a street adjacent to him, he had no motive to damage the latter’s vehicle.

Instead, he said he was the one who had been assaulted. He claims he was chased, knocked down with a motorcycle and assaulted by Williams and another man who, he said, tried to chop him.

He also denied beating up Williams in the police station, saying he was “heavily restrained.

“Williams, however, testified that even though he was handcuffed, Clarke continually attempted to hit him and threatened to cripple and kill him.The tension between the two men spilled over into the courtroom as Clarke continually interrupted Williams while he testified.

He continued ranting even when Magistrate Mc Gusty warned him to shut up.Prosecutors objected to bail being granted to Clarke, citing the severity of the threats and his history of appearing before the court.

Clarke begged the magistrate to give him bail since he had family and business to attend to, but she turned a deaf ear and remanded him to prison until February 12, 2025. In December 2022, Clarke was sentenced to three years in prison after admitting to stealing a loaded shotgun from a Sheriff Security guard.

On December 25, 2022, at Bel Air Avenue, Georgetown, Clarke stole a 12-gauge shotgun and three cartridges worth $353,000 from Toussaint Williams, a security officer.
