Two Men Stand Trial for 2018 Murder of Bourda Market Vendor

0

The trial of two men accused of murdering Bourda Market vendor Troy Ramalho in 2018 is underway at the Demerara High Court.

Before Justice Navindra Singh and a jury, Akeem Morris, 32, and Roy Sandiford, 39, both pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from the fatal shooting of the vendor during a robbery.

Morris, a miner from Sandy Bob Street, Kitty, Georgetown, and Sandiford, a resident of Section “A” Sophia, Georgetown, are alleged to have been part of a three-man gang that ambushed Ramalho on August 15, 2018, near Bourda Market in Georgetown.

Prosecution attorneys Muntaz Ali and Christopher Belfield contend that the incident occurred around 11:00 p.m. when Ramalho, known for selling cheese and eggs in front of “Rambarran’s” on Robb Street, Georgetown resisted the robbery.

According to the reports, the assailants were armed, and during the confrontation, Ramalho was fatally shot. Despite immediate assistance from bystanders, the 45-year-old vendor succumbed to his injuries. Morris is represented by attorney Kiswana Jefford, while attorney Dexter Todd serves as Sandiford’s defence counsel.
