Fifteen-year-old Destiny Solomon of Kaneville/Grove Second Field, East Bank Demerara (EBD), who was severely injured in a collision with a truck on November 6, 2024, along the Grove Public Road, has undergone six surgeries.
However, there is no guarantee that she will ever walk again. Her grandmother, Beverly Boston, vividly recalled the harrowing day.
While at work around 9:45 am, she received a phone call informing her of the accident. She immediately rushed to the scene at Jimbo Bridge on Grove Public Road, where she found her granddaughter lying on a piece of cardboard on the ground.
Overwhelmed by the sight, she fainted and later regained consciousness in the ambulance, travelling alongside Destiny to the hospital.
Destiny’s mother, Shemine Solomon, expressed frustration over misinformation published by a news outlet on Facebook that same evening at 6:00 pm, falsely reporting that her daughter had already undergone surgery and was in stable condition.
This, she stated, was not the case.Boston noted that the police have only provided them with the truck driver’s name and contact information.
Authorities assured them that once Destiny was discharged and in better health, they would further investigate the matter.
However, after multiple attempts to follow up, Boston was informed by a sergeant at the Grove Police Station that Destiny was deemed at fault and that the case had been forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Shemine stated that no one has reached out to the family. As a single mother of six, she bears the full burden of Destiny’s medical expenses. Boston added that frequent clinic visits cost them $10,000 each time, further straining their finances.
Additionally, she lamented the lack of accountability from the truck driver, stating, “Every time I try to contact him, I never get a proper response.” Emphasising her plea for justice, Boston recounted Destiny’s version of the accident.
She explained that the truck driver flashed his hazard lights, signalling for Destiny to cross.
However, as she began crossing, an approaching car forced her to stop directly in front of the truck, which then proceeded to drive over her.
The accident has severely disrupted Destiny’s education. “Destiny is always begging me to take her to school, but I can’t take her there in the condition she’s in,” Boston said.
