An elderly Georgetown taxi driver accused of attempting to murder his common-law wife with a cutlass remains behind bars after his latest bid for bail was denied.

Keith Williams, 60, has been on remand since November 2024 after allegedly launching a violent attack on Deanna Bourne, 74, at their El Dorado Avenue, South Ruimveldt, Georgetown home.

On Wednesday, January 29, 2025, Williams appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith Mc Gusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, where his attorney pleaded for his release, citing urgent medical concerns.

An attorney for Williams asked for him to be granted reasonable bail citing his medical condition—an enlarged prostate and requires a tube and bag for urination.

The attorney also claimed that Bourne had been discharged from the hospital and that her husband posed no risk of flight.

However, the prosecution strongly opposed bail, pointing out that while Bourne was no longer hospitalised, the severe nature of her injuries had left her unable to do daily activities.

To further support the prosecution’s case, the victim’s daughter, Samantha Bourne, was invited by Magistrate Mc Gusty to provide an update on her mother’s condition.

She told the court about her mother’s condition, emphasising that the elderly woman could no longer function independently due to the severity of her injuries.

After considering the circumstances, the Chief Magistrate ordered that Williams be further remanded to prison. Williams’s next court appearance is fixed for March 5, 2025.Due to the indictable nature of the charge, Williams is not required to enter a plea.

The brutal attack occurred on November 10, 2024, when Williams allegedly forced his way into the couple’s home after being initially refused entry.

Their 17-year-old granddaughter later let him inside, and he proceeded to his wife’s bedroom, waking her up and initiating a heated argument.

Moments later, Williams allegedly retrieved a cutlass from his vehicle and attacked Deanna Bourne, hacking at her face and body.

After the brutal cutlass attack, Williams allegedly tried to escape but was apprehended by bystanders while still clutching the weapon before being handed over to the police.

Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) transported Deanna Bourne to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where she underwent emergency surgery for multiple critical injuries, including a deep facial wound.

Williams reportedly confessed to attacking his spouse while being questioned by the police, stating that he had been smoking marijuana before the incident.

Williams and his partner had been living together for over four decades.
