President Ali talks up community investment during visit to Stratsphey

President Dr. Irfaan Ali, accompanied by key cabinet ministers, visited the community of Stratsphey on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD) today, where he emphasised the government’s commitment to community-driven development.

Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill, Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony, and Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water Susan Rodrigues joined the Head of State for the engagement.

In his address to the residents, President Ali outlined his administration’s focus for 2025, which includes a significant push for increased community investment.

“This year, we want to focus heavily on community investment, ensuring that we prioritise people-centred issues,” President Ali stated. “We want to hear from you as we prepare the budget for the coming year. Your feedback is crucial in shaping how we improve your lives and our nation.”

He highlighted the successes already achieved, such as improved road networks, better access to clean water, enhanced healthcare, and education. However, he acknowledged that challenges remain.

“As we address challenges, new needs emerge,” the President noted, pointing to growing demands for infrastructure such as street lighting, waste management, and community security.

In particular, he mentioned how communities have evolved in their priorities. While access to clean water was once the primary concern, today, issues such as the need for recreational spaces, beautification, and enhanced security have become prominent.

“Development is a continuous process. As the fundamental needs are met, new challenges arise,” President Ali explained. He noted that the government is dedicated to addressing these emerging needs.

He further elaborated on efforts to build economic resilience at the community level, highlighting the role of technology and innovation in agriculture.

“You don’t need 50 acres of land to produce food anymore. With technology, smaller plots can yield the same results. This is part of our focus on developing the productive sectors of our economy, especially agriculture.”

During the visit, Minister Edghill addressed infrastructure concerns raised by community members. He acknowledged issues such as the wear and tear on roads caused by heavy truck traffic and assured residents that improvements are on the way.

He also addressed the need for improved access to schools and community centres, with work already underway to build driveways and enhance walkways.

On the other hand, Minister Rodrigues reflected on the progress made in housing development, citing the creation of nearly 1,000 house lots in areas like Bladen Hall, Stratsphey, and Vigilance.

“In just a few years, many families have built their homes and started new chapters in their lives,” she said. As part of the visit, the President encouraged the community to continue engaging with the government, sharing both their personal and collective concerns.
