President Dr. Irfaan Ali disclosed today that his administration has not only fulfilled its 2020 manifesto promise to create 50,000 jobs but has exceeded it, generating over 60,000 sustained jobs in just four years.

Speaking during a Facebook live stream, the Head of State posited that this achievement is a hallmark of his government’s commitment to economic growth and employment.

“This is a substance of our governance,” President Ali declared. “When we came to the people in 2020, we promised 50,000 jobs. I am only looking here at the sustained jobs.”

He clarified that the reported figure focuses exclusively on sustained employment, separate from temporary or indirect jobs generated in sectors like construction and forestry, or through the reopening of markets impacted by the shutdown of the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) by the former administration.

“When GuySuCo was shut down, many markets were shut down. I’m not talking about those indirect jobs. I am talking about sustained jobs in every single sector,” he explained.

The President provided a detailed breakdown of employment growth across key sectors. He noted that over 29,000 jobs were created in construction, over 11,000 in forestry, more than 6,500 in tourism, above 5,000 in mining, and the rehiring of 2,000 workers by GuySuCo.

“I’m not even talking about tens of thousands of additional jobs that we are already training people for,” he said, emphasising investments in education and skills development.

Initiatives such as the Tourism and Hospitality Institute and new hybrid nursing school are laying the groundwork for further job creation, the Head of State noted.

“These things will add to the expansion of jobs in our economy,” President Ali said.

In addition to these sustained jobs, tens of thousands of individuals benefit from the government’s 10-day work initiative, which allows individuals to work for 10 days and earn $40,000.
