Over 400 Guyanese re-migrate from US, Canada, UK and Caribbean last year – Todd
Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation Hugh Todd has revealed that 409 Guyanese have re-migrated to their homeland in 2024.
During day one of the 2025 Budget debates, Todd said the re-migrants primarily originated from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Caribbean nations.
“Mr. Speaker, this highlights the trust and confidence of the diaspora in the PPP/C government,” the Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation Minister stated.
Todd added that the Ministry has improved the efficiency in processing applications for Guyanese, who would like to return home in keeping with the government’s mandate.
According to Todd, the Diaspora and Remigration Unit within his Ministry continues to process applications within seven working days. This, he noted, represents one-third of the processing time under the APNU+AFC Administration.
He added too that since taking office, the Dr. Irfaan Ali-led Administration has processed approximately 2,000 qualified re-migrant applications.
A list of documents needed to start the re-migrant application can be found on the Ministry’s website along with the websites of Guyanese Embassies and High Commissions overseas.
A Guyanese citizen who is 18 years and above, who has been residing legally overseas for a minimum of five consecutive years, and is now returning home qualifies for all tax exemptions being offered by the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) under the Re-migrant Scheme.
