It is easy to throw around numbers and boast about accomplishments, but when we compare the track records of political parties, the facts speak volumes.

Annette Ferguson recently claimed that the APNU+AFC government drilled nine wells in Region Nine during their five years in office. While that might sound like an achievement at first glance, it pales in comparison to what the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) administration has accomplished in just four years.

Here is the reality: Even if we assume Ferguson’s claim about nine wells is accurate, the PPP/C has drilled 41 wells in Region Nine in less time – nearly five times as many. This is not just a statistic; it represents tangible benefits for residents of Region Nine, who now have greater access to water than ever before.

In 2020, when the APNU+AFC’s tenure ended, only 60 per cent of Region Nine residents had access to water. Thanks to the initiatives implemented by the PPP/C government, that figure now stands at 94 per cent. That is not just an improvement; it’s transformative for families who depend on reliable water access for their daily needs.

During APNU+AFC’s time in office, per capita spending on hinterland water infrastructure was less than $10,000. Compare that to the PPP/C government’s current investment of $48,000 per capita.

This substantial increase demonstrates a clear commitment to uplifting Guyana’s hinterland communities, ensuring they receive their fair share of resources.

Across all hinterland regions, the PPP/C has drilled over 100 wells, improving access to clean water from 45 per cent in 2020 to 91 per cent by the end of 2024. And the work isn’t done, the administration has set its sights on achieving 100 per cent access by the end of 2025.

These numbers reflect a government that prioritises action and results over empty promises. The PPP/C’s focus on water infrastructure is more than numbers; it’s about improving lives.

Reliable access to clean water means healthier communities, stronger families, and better opportunities for all.

As we approach the 2025 budget presentation, it’s clear that the PPP/C government has delivered real, measurable progress for the people of Region Nine and beyond.

The difference between the two administrations is stark: one talks, the other delivers.

The question is, will those who once held the reins of power acknowledge their shortcomings, or will they continue to deflect from the undeniable progress Guyana has achieved under the PPP/C?

Either way, the people of Region Nine already know the answer.
