Thirty-seven-year-old Damian Bissoon has been convicted of the 2018 murder of Taj Andrew Jarvis.

The 12-member jury delivered its unanimous guilty verdict at the High Court in Georgetown on Thursday, concluding the retrial that commenced on January 22, 2025.

Justice Damone Younge presided over the proceedings.

Bissoon, also known as also known as Damion Sardina and “Brother”, a labourer from Shell Road, Kitty, Georgetown, was charged with fatally stabbing 27-year-old Jarvis on March 30, 2018, at the intersection of Barr and Alexander Streets in Kitty.

State Prosecutors, attorneys-at-law Alvaro Ramotar and Delon Fraser led the case for the state, while defence attorney Ronald Bostwick represented Bissoon.

Justice Younge made it clear to Bissoon that he would be remanded to prison until his sentencing hearing, set for February 25, 2025.

Evidence in the High Court revealed that Bissoon confronted Jarvis, who was walking along Alexander Street, demanding payment of money owed by the latter.

When Jarvis insisted that he owes no one a cent, a physical alternation ensued. On arrival at Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), Jarvis, who was stabbed several times, was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Following the murder, police had issued a wanted bulletin for Bissoon. For years later in 2022, Bissoon surrendered himself in the company of his attorney.

The first trial, which began in October 2024 before Justice Peter Hugh of the Demerara High Court, ended with a hung jury, hence retrial was ordered.
