During his January 9, 2025, press conference, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo responded forcefully to criticisms from opposition parties, calling their accusations baseless and counterproductive.
He accused opposition members of deliberately distorting facts to undermine the government’s progress on key national initiatives.
Jagdeo expressed frustration over what he described as “constant negativity” from the opposition, emphasizing that their attacks lack constructive solutions.
“It’s easy to criticize from the sidelines, but where are their ideas? Where are their contributions to improving the lives of the people?” Jagdeo asked.
The Vice President took the opportunity to outline the government’s achievements over the past year, including record-breaking economic growth, substantial foreign investment, and infrastructure development.
He pointed to the administration’s success in expanding healthcare, education, and housing services for citizens as evidence of its commitment to delivering on campaign promises.
Jagdeo also reiterated his government’s focus on transparency and accountability, addressing claims of corruption within state institutions. He stressed that all allegations are being thoroughly investigated and that systems are in place to hold public officials accountable.
“The opposition loves to throw around the word ‘corruption,’ but we have mechanisms to investigate and address these issues. We’re not sweeping anything under the rug,” he said.
He concluded by urging the opposition to take a more constructive approach, emphasizing that collaboration—not constant criticism—is needed to tackle national challenges.
