As 2024 drew to a close, Hon. Zulfikar Mustapha, Minister of Agriculture, hosted a highly anticipated year-end press conference to highlight the nation’s strides in the agriculture sector and share ambitious plans for the year ahead.

The event, held on December 30, 2024, underscored the government’s commitment to making agriculture a cornerstone of Guyana’s economic development.

Celebrating Record-High Achievements

Minister Mustapha proudly announced a historic milestone in rice production. Guyana exported an impressive 425,490 tonnes of rice and rice products in 2024, generating over US$254 million in revenue. This achievement marks a significant leap forward in the nation’s agricultural output and its ability to compete on the global stage.

The honey industry also had a banner year, producing approximately 18,000 gallons as of October 2023. The Minister applauded the hard work of local beekeepers, emphasizing that this success reflects the resilience and innovation of Guyanese farmers.

He also addressed Infrastructure: The Backbone of Growth; in this, he said that a large portion of the press conference was dedicated to discussing infrastructure investments that have bolstered the sector.

Over $112 million was allocated to critical drainage and irrigation works in Linden as part of a broader $1.5 billion investment over the last four years.

Additionally, an $800 million irrigation pump station is under construction in Black Bush Polder, Region Six, which is expected to transform rice cultivation in the area by mid-2025.

In terms of the agricultural occupation that is empowering farmers and communities, the Ministry also focused on improving livelihoods in rural and hinterland communities.

Farmers in Region Nine received farming tools to expand production and improve food security. These efforts aim to ensure sustainable agricultural practices while fostering economic growth in some of the country’s most remote areas.

In a nod to technology’s growing role in agriculture, Minister Mustapha announced the deployment of a $3 million multispectral drone in Region Nine. This cutting-edge technology will enhance data collection and help optimize farming practices in the hinterland in looking ahead to 2025.

The Minister outlined an ambitious vision for 2025, including transforming regions like Region Two into agricultural powerhouses. Plans also include providing state-of-the-art equipment and expanding support programs for farmers, which are crucial to ensuring the sector’s long-term success.

“The success we’ve seen this year is the result of hard work, innovation, and unwavering commitment to our agricultural sector. But there’s still so much more to do. In 2025, we will redouble our efforts to modernize and expand agriculture in every corner of Guyana,” Minister Mustapha said.

As the press conference concluded, the Minister reaffirmed the government’s pledge to continue investing in agriculture as a driver of national development. With a record-breaking year behind them, the Ministry of Agriculture is looking ahead to an even more transformative future.
