Hughes cast doubt on 2025 election after meeting with GECOM

Leader of the Alliance for Change (AFC) Nigel Hughes today confirmed predictions that he would attempt to cast doubt on GECOM’s ability to conduct elections later this year.

At a press conference following a meeting between the AFC and GECOM today, Hughes said that the party has no confidence in the election body to conduct national elections which are expected to be held in November.

“We [the AFC] have no confidence that the Commission as it is presently structured, would be capable of delivering credible elections for 2025,” Hughes said, after noting that the meeting lasted for about three hours.

Earlier in the day, PPP-nominated GECOM Commissioner Sase Gunraj predicted that the AFC would seek to cast doubt on the body’s ability to conduct elections.

“AFC just met with GECOM. Look out for the releases: TODAY: “We have no confidence in GECOM!” NEXT WEEK: “We’re not contesting the elections!” #predictable #solelosers” Gunraj wrote on his Facebook page.

Analysts had also predicted that the AFC would seek to cast doubt on the elections if itGeneral Secretary of the ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo contended earlier today at a press conference that the AFC does not have a support base and will attempt to cling to the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) to gain support.

The AFC and the PNCR are currently in talks about the possibility of rejoining forces to contest the elections.

PNCR leader Aubrey Norton has also been identified as presidential candidate of that party, while Hughes has been identified as presidential candidate of his party.

Hughes a few days ago said that Norton would not be the presidential candidate of the coalition, to which Norton responded today in a Stabroek News report affirming that he will serve as the presidential candidate of any coalition that the PNCR is part of.
