In a commendable effort to improve transportation and living conditions, the Ministry of Housing and Water successfully upgraded over 65.7 kilometres of roads to asphaltic concrete surfaces across 32 communities in 2024. Minister Collin Croal shared this positive development during the ministry’s end-of-year press briefing last Friday, highlighting the significant impact of these upgrades on local communities.

The extensive roadworks not only facilitated smoother travel but also created new investments and employment opportunities, alleviating congestion for thousands of commuters and residents alike.

Minister Croal emphasized, “We have been able to initiate as well as construct more than 9.1 kilometres of four-lane macro roads. The evidence is there across Regions Three and Four, where the investment alone totals over $23 million on highways.”

In addition to road improvements, the government undertook infrastructural initiatives to transform numerous housing schemes nationwide, ensuring allottees gained access to their designated lands. These efforts included land clearance, road access, bridges, culverts, drainage networks, and utility services, a comprehensive approach to fostering sustainable living environments.

In 2024, Minister Croal noted that the project team commenced and, in some instances, completed developmental works in 19 housing schemes.

These include notable developments in Palmyra, Wales, Good Hope Block F (Phases I and II), Good Hope Block E (Phases I and II), La Bonne Intention (LBI Phase III), Two Friends (Phases I and II), Lusignan (Phases I and II), NNon-PareilPhase II, Enterprise Phase II, Yarrowkabra, Block A Waterloo, Amelia’s Ward squatting area, Fitz Hope, Amelia’s Ward residential area Phase Four, and Hauraruni.

Last year alone, the government allocated over $100 billion towards accelerating housing and water developments across the country. “Investments on the physical infrastructure side amounted to over $77 billion in 2024. These lands are heavily subsidized, making the costs for new homeowners minimal compared to what is necessary to provide them access to their new areas,” Minister Croal explained.

Overall, the ministry’s initiatives reflect a strategic commitment to enhancing the quality of life for citizens through improved infrastructure and housing solutions, reinforcing the government’s dedication to sustainable development and community welfare.
