GPHC CEO vows ‘drastic action’ against staff found guilty of malpractice against Venezuelan mother

The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) has launched a full probe into the allegations of negligence and mistreatment by a Venezuelan mother, the Corporation Chief Executive Officer Robbie Rambarran said on Tuesday.

Rambarran told media operatives that any staff found guilty would face “severe, drastic disciplinary action.” He assured the public that there will be “absolutely no cover-up,” Rambarran stated.

He added, “I promise you there will be no leniencies in this. If there is any malpractice, people will be held culpable because this is unacceptable,” he stated.

The incident, which occurred on January 18, 2025, involved Mayhelm Gonzalez, a 32-year-old Venezuelan mother, who alleged negligence and mistreatment during labour at the institution, which she believed led to the death of her baby.

According to Rambarran, the incident was initially flagged by the Head of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department before the woman’s report.

Reports from the patient and the medical staff have already been collected, and a preliminary meeting was held on Monday to assess the findings.

The full probe is expected to be completed by Thursday. Rambarran acknowledged that lapses in professional conduct occur in healthcare settings but reiterated that such behaviour is “completely unacceptable.”

He highlighted ongoing efforts to train healthcare workers in customer service, conflict de-escalation, and empathetic patient care. However, he admitted, “Sometimes people act irrationally or react to situations, but it will not be condoned.”
