Gov’t Partners with G-Mining to Train Guyanese for Major Gold Mine Project

The government has entered into a strategic partnership with G-Mining, a Canadian gold company, to train thousands of Guyanese citizens for employment at one of the country’s largest upcoming gold mines in Region Seven.

The training initiative is set to begin in February 2025, with an initial cohort of 1,500 trainees, and will expand as the mine develops. Minister of Labour Joseph Hamilton shared details of the collaboration during a press briefing at the ministry’s head office on Tuesday.

He emphasized that the training program will focus on equipping individuals with the skills needed to work across various roles, including equipment operators, welders, fabricators, electricians, and more.

The program is expected to continue growing as the mine develops, with a significant increase in training opportunities by 2027 when the mine is fully operational.

Minister Hamilton stressed that the primary focus would be on recruiting and training individuals from Region Seven, particularly both men and women from the surrounding communities. The project is seen as a major step in strengthening Guyana’s mining sector while creating sustainable employment opportunities for local residents.

This partnership aligns with the government’s broader vision to ensure that Guyanese benefit directly from the exploitation of the country’s natural resources. By prioritizing local employment and offering extensive training programs, the government is helping to ensure that foreign companies operate in a way that boosts the local economy and provides tangible benefits to the people of Guyana.

The mining operations will take place primarily in Region Seven, where the majority of workers are expected to be from the local area. The project is part of G-Mining’s plans following their acquisition of Reunion Goldmines, and the company is preparing to establish one of the largest gold mining operations in the country.

Training will take place at a facility in Bartica, where all the staff for the new mining center will be prepared for their roles.

The government’s emphasis on training and local employment is an integral part of its policy to ensure that the benefits of foreign investment are shared with Guyanese citizens. By mandating local hiring quotas and promoting skill development, the administration is securing jobs for Guyanese while advancing the country’s economic growth.

The development of this gold mine is expected to provide a significant boost to both the mining sector and the wider economy, offering long-term employment opportunities for residents of Region Seven and beyond.
