Geotechnical study delays port kaituma stelling completion
The completion of the $1.4 billion Port Kaituma stelling has been delayed due to geotechnical challenges and design flaws, according to recent statements from the Ministry of Public Works and the project’s contractor.
Speaking with the media, the Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill, explained that earth movements in the area have caused failure in the delay and a new design is needed to ensure the facility’s stability and functionality.
“The geotechnical research is influencing a new design to facilitate the failure in the movement of the earth,” he stated. The stelling structure is in place, but the movement of the earth has made it challenging to complete the project. “We’ve had some movement in the earth, and we have to do a geotechnical investigation to get a design so that we could get the boat in,” Edghill added.
In July 2024, the contractor, International Import and Supplies, reported that fissures had appeared in the backfilled area during the final stages of construction, prompting an immediate cessation of work.
An independent third-party firm was engaged to review the initial design, revealing deficiencies, particularly in the affected zone of the structure.
The Ministry retained this firm to conduct a new geotechnical survey and prepare a revised design, which has since been completed. The new design addresses the deficiencies identified in the initial design, including the implementation of longer and thicker piles and tie rods.
These items have been procured, and preparations are underway to resume work on the project.
Meanwhile, Minister Edghill confirmed that the design firm, CEMCO Inc., has acknowledged the flaws in the original design. “The designer has admitted that there was a flaw in the design,” he said. The Ministry is now focused on rectifying these issues to ensure the stelling’s completion.
The Port Kaituma stelling is a critical infrastructure project aimed at enhancing transportation and commerce in Region One (Barima-Waini). Initially, the project was expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2024. However, due to the unforeseen geotechnical challenges and necessary redesigns, the timeline has been extended.
As of March 2024, the project was reported to be 85% complete. The Ministry of Public Works has not provided a specific timeline for the completion of the geotechnical study or the finalization of the stelling. Residents of Port Kaituma continue to await the full functionality of the facility, which is essential for the region’s development.
