Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill has assured the public that while no final decision has been made regarding the fate of the current Demerara Harbour Bridge, once the new bridge becomes operational, it will not be discarded as “scrap iron.”

Speaking at a presser in Georgetown on Saturday, Edghill highlighted the structure’s potential for repurposing.

“There are a lot of possibilities,” he said, emphasising that the 1.2-kilometre floating bridge would continue to serve Guyana’s development in a meaningful way. The Minister suggested several potential uses for the structure, such as connecting Leguan and Wakenaam or providing a crossing over the Canje Creek.

“It would not be needed where it is, but it could be relocated to other parts of the country to support economic and infrastructural development,” Edghill explained.

He reiterated that the government is exploring options to ensure the bridge remains a valuable asset to the nation. “It will be part of enhancing Guyana’s development,” he affirmed. The bridge, which is currently over 40 years old is the main thoroughfare between Regions Three and Four. The new bridge is anticipated to be completed by August 31, 2025, and will be toll-free.
