Abayomi Hart, a 40-year-old technician involved in a fatal collision at the intersection of North Road and Camp Street, Georgetown, has been granted bail, more than one year after the accident.

The accident, which occurred on September 7, 2023, claimed the life of 30-year-old motorcyclist Loyden Alexander Britton of Bagotstown, East Bank Demerara (EBD).

According to reports, Britton was riding motorcycle CJ 4079 west along North Road when he failed to stop at a red light and collided with Hart’s motorcar, PNN 7200, travelling south on Camp Street.

The impact caused Britton to be thrown a significant distance, resulting in severe head and body injuries. He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he later succumbed while receiving treatment.

After over a year of delay, Hart appeared before Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Friday to face charges related to the fatal accident.

Hart, a resident of Farm, EBD, was formally charged with causing death by dangerous driving. Hart, who was unrepresented by an attorney, pleaded not guilty and listened as Magistrate Azore questioned the prolonged timeline for the case to reach the court.

In response, a police investigator explained that the matter had been sent to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice and was only recently returned, leading to Hart being contacted on December 31, 2024.

The prosecution did not object to bail, and Magistrate Azore granted Hart bail of $250,000.

The magistrate emphasised the importance of the case proceeding without further delay and scheduled Hart’s next court appearance for February 7, 2025, for him to collect statements.
