Construction Begins for $1.2B Secondary School in Kaneville

The Ministry of Education has initiated the construction of a new secondary school in Kaneville, a project valued at $1.2 billion. The Kaneville Secondary School is expected to serve over 1,000 students from the Kaneville-Grove area, addressing challenges of overcrowding and improving access to education on the East Bank of Demerara.

The sod-turning ceremony, led by the Honourable Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, was attended by Regional Education Officer Ms. Keane Adams, Senior Education Officer Mr. Colwyn Delph, and other officials.

Project OverviewThe project, with a total cost of G$1,206,255,197, is set to begin construction on January 12, 2025. The expected duration is 11 months, followed by a three-month defects period to ensure quality standards are met.

Origin Investments has been appointed as the project consultant, with multiple local contractors contributing to various components of the school’s construction. These contractors include: A. Ograsein & Sons General Contracting, responsible for works valued at G$74,386,975.

Sheriff Construction Inc., handling external works and other components totalling over G$400 million. NP Contracting & Transportation Services, JD’s Construction Company, D&S Construction, JK Enterprise Inc., and You Nailed It Construction contributed to additional aspects of the project.

The contracts were awarded through a public bidding process by the Public Procurement Act and the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board’s guidelines.

Regional ImpactThe Kaneville Secondary School is designed to provide modern learning facilities for students in the Kaneville-Grove area. The project aims to alleviate overcrowding in nearby schools and improve educational access in the region.

Once completed, the school will enhance the educational infrastructure of Region 4, benefiting the community and contributing to Guyana’s efforts toward universal secondary education.

The school is expected to open for the 2026 academic year, providing students with a state-of-the-art learning environment and supporting the Ministry of Education’s commitment to advancing equitable education across the country.
