‘Chicken man’ released on $600k bail following withdrawal of murder charge to manslaughter
A fresh charge has been brought against Seeindra Marimutoo, a 43-year-old poultry vendor from Portuguese Quarters, Corentyne, Region Six, accused of killing 18-year-old Parmand Pertab.
On November 04, 2024, Marimutoo was remanded to prison after being initially charged with murder.
Pertab was reportedly involved in a robbery attempt at the Port Mourant market. Following advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), the murder charge was withdrawn, and Marimutoo was charged with manslaughter under Section 94 of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act Chapter 8:01 of the Laws of Guyana.
On January 20, 2025, Marimutoo appeared before Magistrate Tuanna Hardy at the Whim Magistrate’s Court, where he was granted bail of $600,000. He is scheduled to return to court on February 17.
During his first court appearance, Attorney-at-Law Latchmie Rahamat, representing the accused, expressed intent to correspond with the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) in a formal request for a review of the charge.
Citing provisions within Guyana’s constitution, the defense attorney argued that self-defence, including the defense of one’s property with legal force if necessary, constitutes a complete defense in such cases.
Rahamat emphasized the significance of witnesses who allegedly observed the altercation, implying that vital witness statements had not been duly recorded by law enforcement. Furthermore, Rahamat asserted that other individuals, armed with cutlasses, purportedly played a role in the events, leading to the injuries sustained by the deceased.
The incident occurred on Saturday, October 26, 2024, at around 09:15h, where Pertab, armed with a cutlass, physically assaulted Daniel Dass, a 31-year-old Goldsmith, who was attending to customers in the Port Mourant market. Dass sustained injuries from the attack.
Other accomplices brandishing a handgun joined Pertab, instructing Dass and his staff to lie on the ground as they proceeded to steal jewellery items and flee on foot with a blue string bag filled with the stolen goods.
In response, Dass raised an alarm, prompting market-goers to confront the bandits. A scuffle ensued, resulting in the discharge of three rounds by the robbers, causing injuries to one individual in their lower limbs.
Mikey, armed with a cutlass and in possession of the stolen jewelries, a determined group in the market confronted him, disarmed him, and successfully retrieved the elusive blue bag which contained the stolen items.
Law enforcement was promptly notified, and upon the bag’s surrender, all stolen goods were recovered and documented. Mikey, in his desperate attempt to evade capture, sustained several injuries across his body, causing him to collapse near the entrance to the construction site designated for the government’s Oil and Gas College at Port Mourant, Corentyne Berbice.
In the aftermath, the casualties of the encounter were promptly attended to at the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where medical professionals assessed their conditions.
Pertab succumbed to his wounds during treatment, while Mark Lovell received care for his gunshot injuries and later discharged himself from the hospital.
A thorough examination of Mikey’s body, revealing specific wounds, indicated the violent nature of the encounter. On Wednesday, October 30, 2024, a postmortem examination performed on Pertab’s body revealed that he died from shock and haemorrhage due to multiple incised wounds.
