The Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) achieved remarkable progress in its fight against drug trafficking in the preceding year, confiscating and destroying an astonishing 6,738.212 kilograms of illegal narcotics.
This massive haul, when assessed at street value, is estimated to be worth approximately $5.6 billion.Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn, disclosed that the interdictions included 5,094.67 kilograms of cocaine, 1,643.45 kilograms of cannabis, and 92 kilograms of methamphetamine (meth).
Minister Benn stated that there has been a significant rise in cocaine seizures and progress in the fight against drug trafficking.
A significant portion of these cocaine seizures, totalling 4.4 metric tonnes (4,400 kilograms), stemmed from a singular operation conducted in Matthews Ridge, Region One. This interception represents one of the largest drug busts in recent years.
The Home Affairs Minister also highlighted the successful interception of unauthorized aircraft engaged in narcotics transport. As a result, several persons are currently serving sentences for their involvement. The operations culminated in the apprehension of 82 individuals, with 68 convictions secured and 54 individuals charged with offences related to drug trafficking.
Despite these substantial achievements, Minister Benn emphasized the necessity for enhanced international cooperation to dismantle transnational drug networks effectively.
He underscored the need for increased support from international stakeholders, including expanded radar coverage and additional resources for CANU and the Guyana Police Force.
The Minister highlighted that the demand for substances like cocaine and marijuana originates primarily outside of Guyana, not within its borders. He further stated that this trade is driven by the unyielding global appetite for these drugs, leaving Guyana to face the repercussions.
