Interdicted Police Sergeant Dion Bascom has denied apologising—either orally or in writing—to Azruddin Mohamed regarding allegations of Mohamed’s involvement in the murder of Ricardo Fagundes, also known as “Paper Shorts.”
In a statement to the press, Bascom’s attorney, Nigel Hughes, clarified: “Sgt. Dion Bascom did not issue any apology, whether oral or written, to Mr. Azruddin Mohamed.”
The attorney’s remarks followed an article published in Kaieteur News titled, “Mohameds drop lawsuit after Sgt. Bascom apologises over murder accusations.”
According to the article, Mohamed claimed he had withdrawn the $200 million lawsuit filed against Bascom after the Police Sergeant allegedly apologised and was subsequently forgiven.
However, Hughes categorically refuted these claims, stating, “The civil suit was discontinued by Counsel for Mr. Azruddin without any apology or compromise on the part of Dion Bascom.”
Bascom gained widespread attention in 2022 after being released from police custody following a drug bust at a residence on Norton Street, Georgetown. In a now-deleted Facebook Live stream, Bascom alleged that his arrest was part of a conspiracy to kill him and accused Mohamed of involvement in covering up the murder of Fagundes.
In response to these allegations, Mohamed issued a lawyer’s letter demanding that Bascom cease making or repeating defamatory accusations, retract his statements, and issue an “unqualified apology.”
Bascom, however, publicly declared that he stood by his claims. Mohamed initially sought more than $100 million in damages for defamation, along with exemplary, punitive, and aggravated damages exceeding $100 million.
