Preparations underway for meeting with Guyana-Suriname Border Commission – Todd
Following Suriname’s recent protest note to Guyana over the New River Triangle (NRT), Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hugh Todd has disclosed that preparations are underway with the Guyana-Suriname Border Commission.
The Minister made this revelation during Day One of the 2025 National Budget debate.
“With respect to the management of our relations with Suriname, the accumulation and analysis of historical documents relating to the unresolved border issues between the two countries has been and will continue to be given significant attention,” Todd posited.
The Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister added that both countries have reaffirmed their commitment to pursue the agreed initiatives under the Strategic Dialogue and Co-operation Platform (SDCP).
Guyana and Suriname signed the SDCP during a Presidential visit to Suriname in November 2020 to enhance cooperation by establishing several working groups in several areas, including infrastructure, agriculture, security, health, trade, and the environment.
“The Ministry will continue to employ several multimedia avenues to disseminate information on Guyana’s borders,” Todd told the National Assembly.
The next SDCP between the two countries is scheduled for February 2025. Last year, the Suriname government issued a protest note to Guyana over the plans announced by President Dr. Irfaan Ali to develop the airstrip at ‘Camp Jaguar’ in Region Six, known as the New River Triangle.
Suriname has falsely claimed the area as its own. Following the note, President Ali stated that there was nothing wrong with Guyana seeking to develop the Camp Jaguar airstrip, on its own territory.
