Twenty-three-year-old Noel Husbands from La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara (WBD), appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Friday on a charge for the offence of unlawful wounding.

The incident, reportedly fuelled by weeks of mounting tension, occurred on January 14, 2025, involving Husbands and his ex-partner, Eon Green, of Middle Road, La Penitence, Georgetown.

Appearing before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith Mc Gusty, Husbands, who was unrepresented by an attorney-at-law, pleaded not guilty to the charge. In his address to the court, Husbands claimed that Green had subjected him to physical abuse prior to the altercation.

According to Husbands, Green had assaulted him, resulting in a broken arm, multiple bruises, and other injuries. He further alleged that Green had robbed him of his personal belongings.

Despite filing a police report about these alleged assaults, Husbands stated that no action was taken, intensifying the strained relationship.

The court heard that Husbands and Green had been cohabiting in Green’s residence in Grove, East Bank Demerara (EBD), before their relationship deteriorated. Following their separation, Green relocated to his mother’s home.

However, the animosity between the two reportedly persisted, culminating in the events of January 14, 2025. Green’s account depicted a violent confrontation.

He alleged that Husbands appeared at his mother’s house, shattered the windows, and set the curtains ablaze. Despite notifying the police, Green claimed the situation worsened the next day. On January 15, 2025, Green said he sought assistance from a relative to secure the broken windows by installing a mesh barrier.

However, Husbands allegedly returned, reigniting a fire by pushing plastic through the mesh. Green further accused Husbands of locking him and his mother inside the house, placing them in imminent danger.

Fortunately, they managed to escape without injury. The prosecution strongly opposed bail for Husbands, arguing that the seriousness of the charges, coupled with the ongoing hostility, posed a significant risk to Green’s safety.

The prosecutor emphasised the likelihood of continued violence if Husbands were released. Chief Magistrate Mc Gusty acknowledged the severity of the allegations and sided with the prosecution, denying bail. Consequently, Husbands was remanded to prison.

His next court hearing is scheduled for February 7, 2025.
