“These gimmicks by the opposition only show how far they’ve fallen” —Jagdeo
Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo has sharply criticized the opposition’s for forming smaller political parties ahead of the 2025 general elections, calling it a sign of desperation and political irrelevance.
Speaking during his weekly press conference, Dr. Jagdeo described these entities as “zero parties” that lack genuine public support and serve only to complicate the electoral process.“These so-called smaller parties are nothing more than nuisance parties,” Dr. Jagdeo stated.
“They’re being formed by one or two individuals with no real grassroots backing, no legitimate purpose, and no chance of contributing meaningfully to our democracy.”
Dr. Jagdeo specifically called out the People’s National Congress Reform (PNC/R), accusing them of attempting to create what he termed a “coalition of nothing” by aligning with these minor groups. “It’s a desperate move by the opposition to stay relevant,” he said. “They’re clutching at straws because they know they cannot match the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) in terms of national support or policy achievements.”
Addressing claims made by the opposition about demographic changes influencing electoral outcomes, Dr. Jagdeo firmly rejected the notion.
“Our success has nothing to do with demographics,” he said. “The PPP/C has consistently won elections because of our inclusive policies and our commitment to national development that benefits all ethnic and social groups.
Our policies speak for themselves.”The Vice President also accused the opposition of trying to undermine the democratic process. “These gimmicks by the opposition only show how far they’ve fallen. Instead of focusing on meaningful issues, they’re creating distractions to confuse the electorate,” he remarked.
Dr. Jagdeo concluded by urging voters to focus on the PPP/C’s track record. “We’ve delivered results. From infrastructure development to healthcare and education, we’ve worked for every Guyanese, regardless of race or political affiliation. That’s what matters—not these political games by the opposition.”
