Jagdeo Welcomes James Bond’s Endorsement of President Ali, Denies Any Promises Made

Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo has welcomed the endorsement of President Irfaan Ali by former People’s National Congress Reform (PNC/R) member James Bond, describing the move as a significant decision that reflects a growing trend of political shifts toward the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C).

Speaking at his weekly press conference, Dr. Jagdeo emphasized that Bond’s support was voluntary and not influenced by any promises or incentives.

“Nothing was promised to James Bond—no pecuniary benefits, no contracts, nothing. He voluntarily decided, and I suspect it’s a well-thought-out decision about his future,” Dr. Jagdeo said.

Bond’s decision to back President Ali and the PPP/C has sparked criticism from members of the opposition, with some resorting to derogatory remarks about his political move. Addressing these criticisms, Dr. Jagdeo condemned the attacks, stating that individuals have the right to assess their political alignment without facing vilification.

“The vilest things are said about people because they choose, at some point in their lives, to assess what is best for them,” Dr. Jagdeo remarked.

The Vice President interpreted Bond’s defection as part of a larger trend of individuals abandoning the PNC/R due to disillusionment with the party’s direction.

“People are jumping ship in large numbers because they don’t want to go down in a sinking racist ship that the PNC and APNU are in,” he stated. Dr. Jagdeo also highlighted the opportunities available within the PPP/C for those who align with its vision, citing the example of Kwame McCoy. McCoy, a former PNC/R member, transitioned to the PPP/C and has since risen to prominence, securing one of the highest votes at the party’s recent congress.

“Kwame McCoy, at our last congress, got one of the highest votes in an open, secret contest in a party that they claim is Indo-Guyanese. That shows what is possible in the PPP,” Dr. Jagdeo said, underscoring the party’s inclusivity.

The Vice President reiterated that Bond’s endorsement of President Ali was not solicited with promises or rewards.

“This is something we welcome, but he was never promised anything to come to the PPP,” he clarified. Bond’s public support for President Ali comes as the political climate intensifies ahead of the 2025 general elections.

Dr. Jagdeo suggested that more individuals from various political backgrounds are likely to align with the PPP/C as the elections approach, citing the party’s broad-based appeal and commitment to national development.

As the political landscape continues to shift, Bond’s endorsement adds to the momentum of the PPP/C, further highlighting the challenges faced by the opposition in retaining its support base.
