Marlon Rodrigues, a 23-year-old construction worker has been remanded to prison for the offence of robbery underarms. The defendant, who resides at Perry Street, Guyhoc Park, Georgetown, was brought before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Wednesday.

Acting Chief Magistrate Faith Mc Gusty read the charge to him, alleging that on January 13, 2025, at Commerce Street, Georgetown, he robbed Rupnarine Kurpaul of a cellphone valued at $34,000.

The accusation further stated that Rodrigues was armed with a knife during the commission of the crime.Rodrigues, who was unrepresented by an attorney, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

In objecting to bail for the defendant, the police prosecutor cited the serious nature and prevalence of the crime as well as the penalty attached to the offence.

Kurpaul was reportedly walking along Commerce Street, Georgetown, at approximately 5:00 PM when Rodrigues confronted him and forcibly took his cell phone. Kurpaul immediately raised an alarm, attracting the attention of nearby citizens who pursued the suspect.

A police officer on duty observed the chase and apprehended Rodrigues. During a search, the officer allegedly found both the stolen cellphone and the knife used in the robbery in Rodrigues’ possession.

Kurpaul later positively identified Rodrigues and the recovered items at the police station. After hearing the prosecution’s objections to bail, Magistrate Mc Gusty ordered that Rodrigues be remanded to prison. The case is set for further hearing on February 5, 2025.
