Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn highlighted the ongoing developments and challenges in immigration and border control in Guyana during an end-of-year conference held at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC) on Monday, January 13, 2024.

He emphasized the government’s commitment to improving border security systems while also managing the growing influx of migrants, particularly from neighbouring Venezuela.

“Our border security infrastructure is being modernized to ensure efficiency and safety,” Minister Benn said during his speech. He focused on the successful introduction of biometric systems at key entry points, including the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) and the Takutu River Bridge.

These systems are expected to improve security and streamline immigration procedures. “We are committed to improving the flow of people through our borders while ensuring that we remain secure. The introduction of biometric systems will significantly enhance the efficiency of our entry and exit procedures,” Benn stated.

He also shared that this technological upgrade was part of a broader effort to combat human trafficking and other transnational crimes. The Home Affairs Minister also addressed the challenges posed by the increasing number of migrants, particularly those fleeing the economic and political crisis in Venezuela.

He acknowledged the strain this has placed on Guyana’s immigration systems and public services but reassured citizens that measures are in place to manage the situation.

“The influx of migrants from Venezuela has posed certain challenges for us,” Minister Benn said. “We are working closely with regional and international partners to ensure that our immigration systems can handle the demand and that migrants receive the support they need.”

In his remarks, the Minister also stressed the importance of maintaining a balance between ensuring national security and being compassionate toward those seeking refuge.

“We understand the humanitarian aspect of this crisis, and while we must enforce our immigration laws, we are also focused on assisting those who need it most,” he added.

Minister Benn’s comments reflect the government’s continued focus on strengthening Guyana’s border control measures while maintaining a fair and humane approach to immigration.

As the country navigates both security concerns and humanitarian challenges, the Ministry of Home Affairs is dedicated to improving systems and policies to benefit both citizens and migrants alike.
