A 50-year-old carpenter and mason from East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, faced legal consequences for pelting a woman with a brick during a heated confrontation on January 9, 2025.

The accused, Eclife Caravan, appeared on Friday last, before Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, where he pleaded guilty to unlawfully assaulting Daphnie Langervine with intent to cause bodily harm.

He was fined $50,000, with an alternative sentence of three months in prison. The court was informed that Caravan and Langervine had known each other for years, as he often performed work for Langervine and her brother. The incident occurred in the yard of Langervine’s residence, where Caravan’s niece also resides.

Caravan had been previously warned to stay away from the property but entered at the request of his niece. During the confrontation, Langervine reportedly threw a brick at Caravan, striking him in the chest. In retaliation, Caravan picked up the same brick and threw it at Langervine, injuring her right eye.

The court noted the severity of the injury, which caused significant swelling.Langervine informed the court of Caravan’s prior abusive behaviour, including a recent incident that led her to report him to the police.

Despite warnings, Caravan’s presence in the yard escalated tensions. Langervine admitted initiating the physical altercation but expressed fear for her safety, citing Caravan’s continued proximity to her property as a threat.

Eclipse apologised to Langevin in court, repeatedly stating, “I am sorry.”Magistrate Azore took into account Langervine’s admission of provocation and Caravan’s clean criminal record while delivering the sentence.

The magistrate emphasised the seriousness of the injury and noted its potential to leave a permanent scar. Caravan was fined $50,000 and given the option of serving a three-month prison term if the fine is not paid.
