Cash grants are a way to empower our people & give them the support they need to thrive–Jagdeo
The General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) and Vice President of Guyana, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, during his press conference on Thursday, January 02, 2024, reassured the public of the government’s ongoing dedication to its cash grant initiatives.
These grants, he emphasized, are aimed at easing financial burdens and improving the quality of life for citizens across the country.
Speaking passionately, Dr. Jagdeo described the program as a lifeline for thousands of families, especially those grappling with the rising cost of living.
He highlighted the government’s efforts to ensure that every Guyanese household benefits directly from the country’s wealth, calling the initiative a key part of the government’s vision for a more equitable society.
“Our goal is simple: to ensure that every family, especially the most vulnerable, feels the impact of our nation’s progress. These cash grants are not just handouts—they are a way to empower our people and give them the support they need to thrive,” Dr. Jagdeo said.
He also pointed to the success of programs like the “Because We Care” cash grant for students, which has helped thousands of parents manage school-related expenses.
He assured the public that the government is committed to expanding such initiatives in the coming year to ensure no one is left behind.
Additionally, the vice president also addressed concerns raised by opposition groups, defending the program as transparent and effective. He argued that cash grants are a direct and tangible way to improve lives and dismissed criticisms that the program could lead to dependency.
“These grants are about lifting people not holding them back. We are investing in our people, in their potential, and the future of Guyana,” Dr. Jagdeo said firmly.
The cash grant program has been met with gratitude from many families who say it has made a real difference in their lives. Still, it has sparked debate about its long-term sustainability.
Dr. Jagdeo, however, remains confident in the program’s impact, describing it as a practical solution to some of the economic challenges facing citizens. As he concluded, Dr. Jagdeo called on Guyanese citizens to work together with the government to build a stronger and more united nation.
He said: “We have a responsibility to ensure that everyone benefits from our nation’s success. Together, we can create a better future for all.”
The press conference also underscored the government’s commitment to using Guyana’s resources to directly improve the lives of its people, reaffirming its focus on inclusivity and economic empowerment.
