Jagdeo: Guyana No Longer A Hidden Gem
Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo highlighted Guyana’s growing prominence as a travel destination during his press conference on January 9, 2025, revealing that the country welcomed over one million passengers in 2024.
This milestone marks a significant achievement for Guyana, reflecting the government’s efforts to boost tourism and attract international visitors.
According to Jagdeo, this surge in passenger arrivals is a direct result of investments in infrastructure, such as the modernization of the Cheddi Jagan International Airport and improved connectivity with major international carriers.
He also credited marketing campaigns showcasing Guyana’s eco-tourism potential and rich cultural heritage.
“Guyana is no longer just a hidden gem—we are now firmly on the global map as a must-visit destination. Our natural beauty, diverse culture, and economic opportunities are drawing people from all corners of the world,” Jagdeo said.
The Vice President also pointed to the broader economic impact of increased passenger arrivals, noting growth in the hospitality sector, job creation, and foreign exchange earnings. He stressed that the government is committed to ensuring the tourism industry develops sustainably, with a focus on preserving the country’s natural resources.
Jagdeo urged local businesses to take advantage of the influx of visitors by improving their services and expanding their offerings.
“This is not just a win for the government; it’s a win for every Guyanese entrepreneur and community that benefits from tourism,” he said.
In closing, Jagdeo noted that while the government is proud of this achievement, there is still work to be done to further enhance the visitor experience and ensure Guyana remains an attractive destination for years to come.
