
MoL increases focus on improving industrial relations & ensuring workers are provided with fair wages & safe working conditions
At the Ministry of Labor’s year-end conference in Guyana, officials took the opportunity to reflect on the strides made over the past year while setting ambitious goals for the future.
The conference, which brought together key stakeholders from the labour sector, marked an important moment to assess the progress of policies and initiatives aimed at improving the lives of workers across the country.
Minister of Labor Joseph Hamilton addressed the gathering, commending the Ministry’s efforts in advancing workers’ rights, improving employment standards, and addressing key issues in the workforce.
“We have made tremendous progress in 2024, but our work is far from over. The challenges we face are evolving, and so must our approach to address them,” Hamilton stated.
One of the major accomplishments highlighted at the conference was the Ministry’s increased focus on improving industrial relations and ensuring that workers are provided with fair wages and safe working conditions.
The Ministry has also made significant progress in expanding training and development opportunities for workers to meet the demands of Guyana’s rapidly growing economy.
As the nation continues to experience economic expansion, the demand for skilled labour has increased, prompting the Ministry to accelerate efforts in vocational training and apprenticeships.
In addition to highlighting successes, the conference was an opportunity to acknowledge the challenges that remain.
Minister Hamilton pointed out the need for continued vigilance in addressing issues such as job security, ensuring compliance with labour laws, and providing better protection for workers in vulnerable sectors.
He reiterated the importance of fostering a collaborative environment between the government, private sector, and trade unions to achieve shared goals.The year-end conference also featured discussions on the development of new initiatives aimed at improving social security systems, expanding employment opportunities for youth, and ensuring that workers in both urban and rural areas benefit equally from the country’s growth.
As the conference concluded, the Ministry’s leadership underscored its commitment to enhancing the welfare of Guyana’s workforce in 2025 and beyond.
