On Monday, January 6, 2025, a significant meeting took place as Commissioner of Police Clifton Hicken met with Deputy Commissioner Simon McBean and several officers from Regional Division 4’A’ at the Officers’ Mess Annexe, Eve Leary.

This gathering aims to strengthen the bond within the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and set a positive tone for the upcoming year.

The meeting was attended by members of the Executive Leadership Team, including Deputy Commissioners Ravindradat Budhram (Administration), Errol Watts (Operations), and Crime Chief, Wendell Blanhum.

The top cop took a moment to recognize the hard work and dedication of the officers, celebrating a remarkable nearly 34% drop in crime rates in 2024.

However, amidst the praise, Commissioner Hicken conveyed a strong message regarding the conduct of traffic and patrol officers. He highlighted the importance of professionalism, urging traffic ranks to ensure they wear body cameras while on duty.

“Traffic ranks, you are creating embarrassment to this country. From now on, no one should stop a vehicle or request a license without a body camera,” he stated firmly.

He also encouraged officers to communicate with respect, reminding them to greet citizens warmly. For patrol officers, Hicken emphasized the value of engaging with the community more effectively.

He urged them to drive slowly with their windows down, allowing for conversations and interactions with the public. “You should be more visible and approachable,” he said, reminding them of their essential role in community policing.

Addressing the issue of integrity, Commissioner Hicken made it clear that corruption would not be tolerated within the GPF, declaring, “Today marks the beginning of a new era. The corruption ends now.”

He also shared updates about the ongoing developments within the force and outlined the core principles of the GPF’s 2022-2026 Strategic Plan, focusing on improved infrastructure, efficient operations, and fostering strong relationships with communities.

In a spirit of unity, Deputy Commissioners Budhram, Watts, and Blanhum echoed the Commissioner’s sentiments, encouraging officers to cooperate and work together as a cohesive team in the fight against crime.
