12 medical graduates return to Guyana to strengthen Guyana’s healthcare system

Twelve medical graduates from the 2024 cohort have completed their studies in Cuba and returned to Guyana to bolster the nation’s healthcare system.

These professionals will contribute their expertise to the Ministry of Health, with seven among them achieving postgraduate specialisation in various medical fields.

The seven specialists are Dr. Devendra Radhay (Urologist), Dr. Jarrel Watson (Neurologist), Dr. Jason Ramcharan (Neurologist), Dr. Mohan Ronald (Endocrinologist, Havana), Dr. Saif Ali (Ophthalmologist, Matanzas), Dr. Ilona Myrthlyn Spencer (Epidemiologist), Dr. Lhee-Rand Castello ( General Surgeon, Santiago de Cuba).

All seven specialists excelled in their State Final Examinations, securing scores above 96 percent.The other graduates include: Priscila Andrea Clark (Dental Surgeon, Santiago de Cuba), Kurtly Randy Reis (Medical Practitioner, Santa Clara), Dale Daniel DeMendonca (Medical Practitioner, Guantanamo), Phoolmattie Mangra (Medical Practitioner, Granma), Adele Shemika Elcock (Medical Practitioner, Cienfuegos).

Notably, Kurtly Reis and Dr. Priscila Clark graduated with the prestigious Titulo de Oro (Gold Title or Distinction) from their respective universities.All graduates expressed their profound gratitude to the Government of Guyana, the Guyana Embassy in Cuba, and their Cuban professors for their support and guidance throughout their academic journey.

Currently, 33 Guyanese students are undergoing medical training in Cuba, comprising 28 undergraduates and five postgraduates across various provinces.These graduates are expected to significantly impact Guyana’s healthcare system as they embark on their professional journeys, bringing specialised knowledge and skills to improve medical services nationwide.
